A lifestyle and fashion blog with a little bit of chic, a drop of glamour and a lot of love!
Yesterday’s post was about what I thought were the best and worst dresses at Sundays Golden Globes. The dresses seen at the different award shows are the ones that set the trends for the year and sometimes years to come. At Sundays Golden Globes there were 6 trends that seemed apparent.
Lady in Red:
A few months back I wrote a post called : I want a red dress. I never did get one but hope to any day now. After seeing all those gorgeous women on Sunday I want one even more now and maybe one for black tie affairs as well!
To me Jennifer Garner looked absolutely ravishingly beautiful!(I had to use a picture of Jen and Ben because they are definitely the hottest AND cutest down to earth hollywood power couple.) I actually meant to put her in my list of hits yesterday because her Vivienne Westwood dress was simply stunning and was a hit across all the fashion blogs which doesn’t surprise me the least. Fun fact: her dress appeared to be the exact same color as the actual red carpet.
I didn’t love Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior Haute Couture enough to make it a hit. I thought the top was as little weird and not so becoming and even though the belt was a beautiful contrast it dressed the outfit down a bit and was too much color with the gold clutch.
Marion Cotillard looked beautiful in Dior but not fancy enough for what I would expect at the Golden Globes. On her dress I actually like the black belt contrast with the matching shoes. Claire Danes was stunning for a brand new mom especially and Zooey Deschanel in Oscar De La Renta was pretty. I can guarantee you this is just the beginning for red dresses-especially on the red carpet!
Rock that leg: It’s a gutsy move to wear a similar fashion that Angelina Jolie has worn especially since all 5″8 of her seems perfect. There were quite a few dresses this year with leg slits but I honestly don’t think any of them took our breath away as Angie’s did last year when she walked on the stage to present. Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Saint Laurent Paris all have spectacular bodies and looked absolutely magnificent but you just don’t get the same reaction as Angie when they walk out and others like Lea Michelle in Elie Saab just looked like they were copying Angelina. Nonetheless its a sexy way to show some skin without being half-naked and if you have the legs I say flaunt them!
BLACK IS BACK: Harper’s BAZAAR Feb 2013 issue tells us that with all the graphics and colors going around the past few seasons black is finally making its way back. All these gorgeous black dresses seem to just confirm that theory. I always hated being another woman in a black dress at parties but if I had a dress like any of these I don’t think I would mind so much. SofiaVergara was gorgeous, of course if you look like her you can make a garbage bag look stunning. At first I was a little disappointed in Stacey Keibler’s Armani it looked too simple for the woman on the arm of George Clooney but she was obviously going for that look with the middle part and straight hair and she pulled it off and looked classy and gorgeous. Katherine McPhee, Julianne Margulies and Kathryn Wiig were also knockouts in black.
Less is not always more: My favorite theme for the night were the modest dresses. By modest I means ones that had sleeves (short or long) and just were beautiful without being revealing but beautiful for the dress and the woman wearing them. As I get older (sad but true) I realize that it’s classier to keep more covered up and just as easy to look beautiful and elegant. It was a nice change to see stars like Naomi Watts in Zac Posen and Nicole Richie who’s light blue, patterned, Naeem Khan dress made them stand out even in long sleeves, covered bodices, long skirts and closed backs.
Michelle Dockery my favorite Lady Mary Crawley from Downtown Abbey’s cream and gold gown by Alexandre Vauthier was elegant, beautiful and modest but would have looked better had she not been so unrealistically skinny in it. I didn’t love Julianne Moore’s Tom Ford for her for this type of an occasion but apparently the fashion editors and blogs did so it was another magnificent hit for Tom (remember Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar dress last year) and made modest dresses look as beautiful (if not more) than some of the super sexy ones worn (see Halle Berry below).
Kathryn Bigelows and Julianne Margulies were two other beautiful modest dresses worn that night
FLOWER GIRLS: There are always a few stars who want to be different (hint: Bjork’s 2001 Swan dress).
The dresses may be beautiful but they may also not be red carpet worthy. That was my impression of this years floral gowns. Lucy Liu’s Caroline Herrera unfortunately reminded me a little of wallpaper but nonetheless it had a romantic feel to it and looked beautiful on her. I just would not have recommended it for a a red carpet affair. More like a summer wedding maybe. Halle Berry’s Versace was a definite miss! Talk about too much skin showing this was an example. It seemed to be too tight at the waist and all that skin with the floral print was just all wrong, a huge disappointment for me from Versace. Some other floral that night were Tina Fey in L’wren Scott , Jennifer Lopez and Sienna Miller.
You couldn’t help but notice how many nude and white/light dresses there were at the show. Hayden Panettiere was a vision in white Roberto Cavalli, Megan Fox in Dolce Gabbana, Amy Adams in Marchesa, Isla Fisher’s Reem Acra and of course Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway and Alicia Vikander (from yesterday’s post.) The last thing I want to mention is the last theme of dresses that night interestingly enough was fishtail/ mermaid dresses which almost all were in light colors except for Taylor Swift’s.
Ok, that was a lot of fashion to commentate on definitely more than I realized when I started these posts on monday and there were still so many more dresses and styles which I didn’t even mention. Did you notice how almost no one was wearing crazy over the top jewels, a lot more subtlety or all the dresses in light sorbet colors?? I can’t wait to see what happens at the Oscars as the Globes are usually a test run for a lot of celebrities before the Academy Awards in Feb.
